Back in September, we spent the Chuseok holiday (Korean Thanksgiving) touring the island of Jeju located off the southern tip of the peninsula. Enjoy our pics...
At the airport & ready to go!
Bored at the rental car office.
Our first stop was Yongduam (Dragon Head) Rock.
I guess it looks like a dragon.
For lunch we tried to get black pork (a Jeju specialty) but went with this bacon instead. Colter loved it. Hayden & Grant got Mc Donald's afterwards.
Daddy & Colter with bellies full of bacon!
Grant's "Korean" lunch.
Our hotel was across the island. We stopped at a beach to play in the sand a bit.
My shell collecting buddy.
Then we made an impromptu stop at a green tea museum.
We were not fans. It's pretty though!
Colter walking through the tea fields.
Our hotel. The koi fish were a big hit.
Isn't he handsome?!
The next morning we grabbed a 7 Eleven breakfast & hit the road.
Found my Oklahoma :).
Explored Manganggul Lava Tube cave.
The boys were cold so they all took a turn wearing my sweater.
Next stop was the Jeju Haenyeo Museum. Haenyeo are all women divers that dive year round (without oxygen) and collect seafood.
Then we went to a maze. The boys had so much fun. I just followed along!
Nobody wants me to lead. I'm directionally challenged.
In the middle scoping out the route.
And, finally, they found the end!
This horse jerky was for sale in the gift shop. Couldn't even buy one for a joke!
But we did buy hollabong (a type of orange grown on the island) ice cream. It was much better than green tea.
Hiking was next...
...I got this from the internet, but wanted to include it as my pictures don't do it justice.
First, we walked down to the little cove to watch a haenyeo diving presentation.
They sold (& cooked) their catches there too.
Waiting for the demonstration.
Enjoying watching the Chinese.
Mobbed by the Chinese...
...the ENTIRE time.
Look closely at the boys.
Those girls missed the entire dive presentation. Hello, the ocean is the other way!
Trying to leave, but they just can't help themselves.
Ok, now we're headed up.
Again, my pictures just don't do it justice.
We made it. Hayden nearly died (in his mind) walking up. Maybe he was exhausted from the photo frenzy. I bet one of them would have gladly carried him.
And, heading back down.
View of the cove.
Hayden is our writer. His souvenir was a journal. He has told us when he grows up he wants to live alone and write stories.
Day 3- Started with exploring Cheonjeyeon Falls.
There are 3 different falls. Only 2 had water running over them at the time.
We saw these columnar joints in a guidebook and had to see them. They are a (much) smaller version of the ones we saw at Giant's Causeway in Ireland.
The boys and Jeju's main symbol, the dol hareubangs. They are considered to be gods offering both protection and fertility and were placed outside of gates for protection against demons travelling between realities.
A family favorite- Jeonbang Falls- the only waterfall in Asia to fall directly into the ocean.
Where there are rocks (& water is a plus!), G will climb!
Enjoying a cold treat.
Then we spent some time on the beach at our hotel.
Technically the beach was closed because they stop swimming at the end of August. We swam anyway.
Our hotel.
So glad we have ocean lovers.
Then a swim in the pool.
That evening we went to the next property over to watch this Vegas-like dragon show.
There's more! Last day coming soon...
