We're in Korea!....kinda

Three weeks ago, we rose before the Colorado sun and boarded a plane that brought us to the other side of the world to our new home in Seoul, South Korea. We are living on a huge military base in the middle of the city. The area where the US Embassy housing is located is like an old 1960s southern Californian neighborhood with Gulf Coast humidity (maybe even worse). I've been told that the humidity disappears next month and the winters are COLD. So, I've been happy doing more indoor activities until that promised day comes. I wouldn't want any of the boys to melt away. Or myself.

Like I said, we live on a large military base. There is an American style grocery store, a Wal-Mart type store, several fast food chains, a gas station, church, a bowling alley, movie theatre...the list goes on. I like to say that during the week we live in America and on the weekend we go to Korea. The first weekend was spent recovering from jetlag. I apologize to all in advance who make the journey over, it's that brutal. Then the last two weekends we got out in Seoul and explored a little. Fortunately for me Brent got me the phone with the larger amount of storage and we're living amongst a culture that loves to take pictures of everything!

Home sweet home- for the next 2 years.

Daddy celebrated his 35th birthday right after we arrived.

We took him to play mini golf on the base.

We ventured out to a local mall for our first outing. I thought this was amusing- the grain recommendations for different types of people at a grocery store.

And milk soda?!

The mall has play areas where you can pay to leave your kids while you shop. We'll have to try this Lego place one of these days.

Venturing down Itaewon- a tourist area with lots of shops and restaurants.

Including this one. I can honestly say that I've never seen a shrimp patty before.

Trying out our selfie skills.

And can I say, what a difference 6 years makes since we were last abroad?! In more ways than 1- or the two additional little boys we have.

My leopard lover found a place that sold leopard cake and ice cream rolls. Unfortunately, they were sold out for the day. We'll be back!

We saw these creepy masks for sale at several stands. The boys were picking out their Halloween favorites. Too bad mom has something much more precious planned ;).

Some girls at a salon were applying press on nail polish. These two just had to try it. And yes, Hayden picked leopard.

Grant started his first day of 2nd grade. I was able to find a Bundt pan and make Aunt Bridget's chocolate chip coffee bread- our annual first day tradition.

Attending a private international school means you have to wear a uniform. He cried about this in Denver, but has not complained once here. He looks huge....

Where has my Bitty gone?

Waiting at the bus stop down the hill from our house. This is the same spot the embassy shuttle picks Daddy up 10 minutes later so I'm off the hook in the mornings.

And yes, I put my baby on this big bus in a foreign country to go to school.

Another evening of exploring. This time along the Han River.

There are several free outdoor workout areas around the city.

The boys enjoyed watching this building change colors. It actually sits on a man made island in the river.

Then we watched these lighted fountains shoot water from the bridge.

I like all the neon signs advertising the businesses inside the building.

Hayden checking out the options in the subway vending machine. There are some familiar options :).

The boys love the signs and videos on how to behave in the subway- especially the no pushing one, that made them giggle.

My little celebrities. They are pretty popular!

Brent found this place that makes waffle cones in the shape of a fish.

 We gladly sampled one.

They ask to take our pictures, so we ask too!

An old post office.

The boys are learning that Koreans always pose.

Then on to a temple. Hayden proclaimed that he loved this little baby.

Colter in front of the painted doors.

A lotus garden. The pots contained water, not dirt. Shows what I know about lotuses.

These women were making paper lotuses. When we showed interest, they insisted on making one for the boys as well as us eating a piece of gum while we waited.

Colter was mad that he didn't get to sit by the elephant. Guess who got to carry those flowers around all night? Brent urged me to ditch all but 1, but I said its the best souvenir I've got so far and it was free!

Behind Brent is some contraption that makes those funky hanging ice cream cones. We decided to try one. For some reason, the curly one wasn't an option, but we still enjoyed ours. The cone was hollow so we broke it into 5 pieces to share.

And this fried potato was wonderful!

On Tuesday mornings I take the twins to the library for story & craft time and then out for lunch on the base. I am one of the few who does not have a nanny or do full-time preschool (gasp!) so we've had lots of together time. They start preschool September 1st on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. This is my last year with babies at home, so I'm trying to soak it up.

Even when they act like this.

And if I didn't stay home with them, I wouldn't enjoy watching them sleep as much as I do...

Because they still look like this to me.

Ok, enough sappiness. More Korean adventures and Hayden & Colter's first day of school coming up. Although, I make no promises of a non-sappy post.
